Krone wasn’t at the range when Asher arrived, though he never was. Krone liked to make an entrance or liked to keep Asher waiting in anticipation. Perhaps it was to emphasize Asher’s lack of power against Krone. That Krone wasn’t some hit Asher could stalk, that he was his superior and as such was untouchable to him. Either way, Asher purchased some time at one of the outdoor ranges where the targets were wooden instead of paper and shot a few rounds as he waited.

Krone watched Asher pull the trigger several times before approaching, taking in the scene before him. The perfectly chiseled reincarnate of death itself shooting a couple wooden targets with perfect precision shouldn’t have excited Krone so much, but it reminded him of when he had first inherited Asher as his underling. When Asher had first become his personal assassin.

Asher had been little more than a boy then, yet he had been the most silent, unfeeling, trigger-happy brute with skills freshly honed into that of the magnificent work of art he was now. He was more poised now which Krone sometimes regretted, missing the boy he’d followed on hits to watch his technique and make sure he was properly completing his assignments.

Krone fancied himself to be Asher’s teacher. Just making sure he did his homework, and did it right.

Krone’s lips pulled back into a sneer type of smile, he couldn’t help it. He hadn’t seen Asher in so long! He’d missed him and seeing the bodies of Asher’s work had done little to dull the ache of longing in Krone’s otherwise hollow chest. He’d basically jumped at the opportunity to present Asher with this target, though Krone felt it was a waste of his time.

Why The Company insisted on handing Asher such trash hits was beyond Krone. He was the best; he should be treated as the best. Given the best to kill.

“Asher,” Krone greeted cheerily from behind, though the shorter man didn’t jump, didn’t even turn.

“Krone,” Asher returned deeply, pulling the trigger again, his concentration undisturbed.

Krone watched him trigger a few more rounds close up, watched the way his body jerked only slightly to show he was absorbing the kickback from his pistol. Not his usual Beretta though, Krone noticed. He wondered if he had grown bored with his faithful pistol and had decided to switch it up. Seemed slightly out of character since Krone knew Asher to be a creature of habit, but what other reason would there be?

Krone tapped the manila file he carried on the beam Asher was shooting the wooden targets over. He set it down next to Asher’s ammo and waited. Asher didn’t waste any time in holstering his pistol and looking at the file. He didn’t take it, however, in fact he hesitated. Another out of character occurrence that puzzled Krone.

“Is this another hit like Emery Wilson?” Asher asked hesitantly and Krone raised an eyebrow at him. He had never asked any questions before, had never shown any interest in whom he would be killing.
